Competition Rules and Conditions of Entry
Your entry may be of any genre provided that the poem includes at least some aspect of the Malton & Driffield Railway past, present or perhaps future. There is no restriction on the length or form of your poem.
Wherever possible, your entries should be typed in a clear font, with either 1.5 or double line spacing. Written entries are acceptable but should be clear.
Your entry may be a picture depicted in any form as long as it can be sent either by email or by post. As well as the title of the work, please include a sentence or two about what the picture represents or what aspect of the railway inspired it.
There is a wealth of information, reference material and photographs available on our website, to help you or in the excellent book “The Malton & Driffield Junction Railway” by the late Warwick Burton.
The competition is open to anyone – they will be judged under one of the four age categories:
7 and under, 8-12, 13-17 and 18 and over
Entries must be entirely the original work of the entrant, written in English (for poems), must not have been previously published or broadcast, must not previously have won a competition prize and must not be concurrently entered for another competition.
Multiple entries are welcomed but note that no entrant can win more than one prize.
The organisers reserve the right to alter details of the competition if necessary. Please refer to the competition web-site for the latest information.
How to submit
We would prefer you to submit your entries by email, however we will accept entries submitted by post.
Entries to the competition are just £2 each. However, if you would like to include an additional donation for the railway with your submission we would greatly appreciate it especially at this difficult time and when our regular source of income from visitors is on hold.
Entries should be submitted to arrive on or before 6pm on Thursday 31 December 2020. Entries received after this point will not be eligible.
Each entry should include a cover page that contains your name and contact details (address, telephone number and/or email address) plus the title of your poem or picture. Please include your age as it will be at midnight on Thursday 31th December 2020, if you are under 18.
If you are submitting on behalf of a child, please include their first name and your contact details.
Do not put your name on the poem or picture itself.
If you are submitting by email:
Use “Poems and Pictures 2020 ” + your title as the subject of your email
Attach your submission as a Word file (.doc, .docx) or Adobe Portable Document (.PDF) file (for poems) or JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP or TIF file (for pictures). You can attach the cover page as a separate document or use the body of the email.
Submit your entries to email@example.com . Please send a separate email and attachment for each entry.

Post your entries with a cheque to:

Fimber Halt, Beverley Road, Fimber, East Riding of Yorkshire YO25 3HG.
Multiple entries may be included in the same envelope but each must be accompanied by its own cover sheet. Please ensure you use the correct postage.
No alterations can be made to an entry once it has been submitted.
Entries cannot be returned, so please keep a copy.

Select “Poems and Pictures 2020 Entry Fee” and adjust the quantity for the number of entries you intend to submit. After paying, please put the PayPal transaction reference on your cover sheet/email. Login to PayPal, enter your total fee (including any additional donation), select ‘Pay for goods and Services’, use firstname.lastname@example.org as the email address and enter “Poems and Pictures 2020” in the special notes box. After paying, please put the PayPal transaction reference on your cover sheet/email.
Entries will be shortlisted and from these at least one prize will be awarded in each age category for poems and in each age category for pictures, depending on the number of entries received. Details of prizes will be announced, check the website for the latest information.
The winner of the competition will be announced online some time after the closing date before the end of the year – keep an eye on our website for more information. Additional prizes may be announced.
The decision of the judge(s) is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
Copyright remains with the author, but the organisers reserve the right to publish and publicise the entries online or in print after the results have been announced and to print, reprint or publish in electronic or audio form the poem or picture as desired. By submitting your entry you consent to the organisers so publishing your work irrespective of whether it wins a prize.
Winners may be asked to be photographed and interviewed for publicity purposes.
