Re: Burdale Tunnel

I embarked on a project in my simulation tonight which I had put off for a long time namely installing mileposts. I only did the full mileposts and it took maybe 3 hours , based on the 1892 OS map which shows the actual mileposts. It got interesting when I found that milepost 8 was inside Burdale tunnel. Normal NER practice was to attach the milepost to the nearest structure so for instance at Barnard Castle one of the mileposts was attached to a level crossing gate. Many years ago an item turned up at the Malton railwayana auction which purported to have been found inside Burdale tunnel: it was a white painted wooden board about 18 inches square with wooden battens on the back - I can't remember what number it was though. I think it was 5 but it could have been 8. I had never been convinced of its provenance so I sold it later at Malton.
