Basically Ivan, it is a banner repeater signal.
It’s purpose is to give an advance indication of the signal that it applies to. This may be because the signal is obscured, difficult to see or on a curve.

You mean a modern equivalent of the yellow fish-tailed distant signal ?

the distant signal is to show if the next signal is at danger you can also get fixed distants, these are repeaters so if a home or starter
is in the off position and is obscured from a driver this would repeat the position of the home or starter, a banner repeater and a distant are two different things
