I know Brafferton quite well as my sister lives there. I always felt that a railway ran through there as there was a building in a yard on back lane and it disappeared about three years ago.

You lot didn't do too well on this, but Chris was on the right track!

This quiz was prompted by the finding of a bag of old rail tour tickets in the caravan, and doing a bit of research.

Here is the rather obscure link from the photograph to our railway:

1. On 2nd October 1965, the Railway Correspondence and Travel Society ran a rail tour called the “North Lincolnshire Railtour”.
2. The tour started 11: 40 AM and ended 20:12 PM at Nottingham Midland station, and took an anti-clockwise route around Lincolnshire.
3. The train consisted of six carriages and was pulled by Britannia No 70012 “John O gaunt”, which was allocated to Crewe South shed 5A.
4. At 15:56, the rail tour arrived at New Holland Pier station
5. At 16:22, the train departed for Lincoln after the locomotive had ran around the train on the pier loop.
6. The pier run-around loop was controlled by New Holland pier signal box, and the pier was originally built by the Manchester Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway (MS&LR) in 1848.
7. In March 1968 Britannia No 70012 “John O gaunt” was scrapped after just 16 years and 7 months service.
8. On 24th June 1981, New Holland pier station closed and the ferry to Hull ceased operation when the Humber Bridge crossing opened.
9. In the 1980,s much of the station infrastructure was still intact, but New Holland Bulk Services built a grain conveyor over the remaining track on the pier.
10. In 2017 one of our YWR members informed our Pway department that the lever frame in the now grade 2 listed New Holland Pier signal box, might be available and could be useful to the railway for future use.
11. In June 2017, a Pway working party recovered the remaining levers and operational section of the MS&LR lever frame from New Holland Pier SB.
12. In May 2022 the YWR reached an agreement with the Hull and Barnsley Railway Stock Fund, to bring the ex Sprotborough signal box to the railway.
13. In June 2023 restoration began on the ex New Holland MS&LR lever frame for intended re-use inside the restored Sprotborough signal box.
14. In 2024 the signal box restoration will be completed, along with parts of MS&LR lever frame.
15. In 2024 to 2025, a Yorkshire Wolds railway signalman will be pulling off levers that once controlled movement of Britannia pacific No 70012!!

There we have it.

This was probably the last pacific to visit the pier station, and maybe the last steam loco?
