Quiz of the day
Re: Quiz of the day
Darley Dale 1989.
I helped remove the signalbox from Bamford at 05.00 having kipped in the waiting room the previous night. We cut it in half and put in on two low loaders then drove it to Darley Dale with one of us lifting power lines with a (wooden) pole as we went under them. There's a funny story behind the signal.

Re: Quiz of the day
Well as you notice in the photo there is a signalbox and signal but no track. Somebody had decided that we needed them to make it more like a railway station. So they put the signal next to what would be the level crossing, then found that the modern signalling rules declared that it must be further from the crossing to allow the driver braking distance, so it was moved again and a hole dug in the platform. Then someone pointed out that the post was too close to the platform edge and could be hit by an open door so another hole was dug and parts were made to convert it into a bracket signal , which it remains today. I suggested sarcastically that it should be mounted on castors but they poured scorn on my idea for some reason.
The toilet block, half completed in the photo, was paid for by a local government grant even though it was completely unnecessary and work fizzled out for a year or two till they decided they had to complete it. One of the volunteers was a surveyor by trade and he declared the drains had been put in sloping the wrong way so they had to be dug out and relaid otherwise it would fail its inspection.

I have found a link between BR Britannia pacific No 70012 “ John O Gaunt”, and the Yorkshire Wolds Railway.
What is the connection?
