Short Story Competition 2016

Post by Belborough »

We are always looking for new ways to raise funds and promote awareness and - if you haven't read about it already - are announcing the launch of our own Short Story Competition to encourage people to write imaginatively about the line and the region.

The official launch of the competition will be at our Fimber Halt site on the first open day of the season, Sunday May 1st, 2016 at 1 pm and you are invited to come along, see our railway and find out more.

Entries to the competition are just £2 each and if we receive enough entries, we intend to publish an anthology of the winning and shortlisted entries to inspire more creative people in the future – as well as what we hope will be a fantastic read!

There will be a prize of £100 for the winner and additional prizes for runners-up.

The publication of the anthology is with the generous co-operation of local publishing house Fantastic Books Publishing:

Latest details will be announced jointly on our website and that of Fantastic Books Publishing, in our newsletter, on site at Fimber Halt and through the local press.

For more information, Full Rules, Conditions of Entry, How to Submit, and tips for budding authors visit:

or pick up a leaflet on site.

Interest in our Short Story Competition has grown!

East Riding Libraries have supported our competition by spreading the word to all their libraries. Hull Libraries are similarly spreading the word. The competition has also attracted some high-profile support.
There has been interest from other Heritage Railways and we are delighted to announce that Lord Faulkner of Worcester http://www.lordfaulkner.net, president of the Heritage Railways Association will be judging the entries.

Cash prizes are being sponsored by the Authors’ Licensing and Collecting Society http://www.alcs.co.uk/ who support creative writing initiatives.

We are also grateful to TV personality Julia Bradbury http://www.theoutdoorguide.co.uk who is donating a personalised signed copy of her Railway Walks book and DVD as a prize.

If you haven't submitted an entry yet, there is still plenty of time - details and entry form can be found in this thread, on site, or on our website: http://www.yorkshirewoldsrailway.org.uk ... sscomp2016

The competition is attracting interest from far afield. I’m involved in the admin at the Fantastic Books end of things and have seen a whole stack of competition leaflets go out to other heritage railways who want to support the venture. There was an article about it in the latest HRA newsletter.

Julia Bradbury is coming to Hull University in October to deliver a public lecture. I don’t have all the details but one to look out for as she is supporting the competition.

I hope we might get a mention on her website http://www.TheOutdoorGuide.co.uk

Deadline Extended!

Thanks to everyone who has sent in entries so far.
If you haven't yet submitted an entry ... don't worry, it's not too late.

In collaboration with Fantastic Books Publishing and to accommodate the busy time that is the new school year, the deadline has been extended to 31st October 2016 to allow schools to organise entries from enthusiastic pupils.

Remember, anyone can enter, whether you have written before or not. Each entry costs £2 and details can be found at:
http://www.yorkshirewoldsrailway.org.uk ... sscomp2016

There is no age restriction and the best of the entries will be published in a professionally edited anthology.
The Fantastic Books’ competition anthologies are known for their quality. They recruit professional writers to be published alongside the competition shortlist, and have seen shortlisted entrants from previous competitions go on to become successful novelists.

The aim is to announce the competition long-list at FantastiCon 2016 at the end of November - http://www.fantasticon.co.uk

Happy Writing!

Long-list announced!

Happy New Year all!

We are pleased to announce the publication of the long-list which can be found on Fantastic Books Publishing's site at https://www.fantasticbooksstore.com/com ... mpetitions

Thanks to all who took part and even if your story did not make the long-list, every entry was appreciated; do try again another time.

Congratulations to all those who made it this far.

All stories on the long-list will be considered for inclusion in the competition anthology. Authors of these stories will be contacted by Fantastic Books Publishing as part of the professional editing process of producing the anthology.

The judging process is based on the stories as originally submitted to the competition and the final Competition judge is Lord Faulkner of Worcester, a Deputy Speaker in the House of Lords and former president of the Heritage Railways Association.

The short-list and details of prize-giving will be announced soon.

Short-list announced!

All long-list authors and invited contributors have now been contacted by FBP for inclusion in the anthology which promises to be an excelent publication.

We can now announce the short-list which will also be on Fantastic Books Publishing's site at https://www.fantasticbooksstore.com/com ... mpetitions

They are (in purely alphabetical order):
  • A Solicitous Wife
    Dodging to a Halt
    Return to Wetwang
    The Diary of Daniel Duck
    The Last Train
    Trains of Thought
Many congratulations to the authors whose entries have been shortlisted.
There will be cash prizes for the winners and one story will win the Julia Bradbury 'Spirit of the Wolds' prize.

We are delighted to announce that the final Competition judge, Lord Faulkner of Worcester, will be visiting our site to present the key prizes.

Prize-giving will be on Sunday 30th April at around 1:30 pm.
Lord Faulkner will be joining us that afternoon and Mayor of Driffield, Cllr Mark Blakeston will also be on hand to help with the prizes.

We hope many of you will come along to congratulate the winners and all who took part.

All being well, the anthology will be launched at the same time, by FBP, and will available to purchase at a discount from the Fimber Halt shop on the day.
