Just a point to bear in mind Mathew, in the past it was common to have a competent person( I have a city and guilds for gas fitting) fit the appliance and just get a gas safe registered fitter to sign it off, and issue a certificate. Just bear in mind that if you put the aluminium panels over a fire they are only 20/22 gauge and will melt and fire off white hot balls if they get too hot .

You are basically on the right track Mathew but its way more complicated than that. As the loco moves to the left (which it does), the left wheels run on a larger diameter than the right wheels which induces Hunting Oscillation to occur which in turn creates slippage. Gradients can cause adhesion loss resulting in wheel slip but that is not the reason. Over the past 80 yrs or so millions have been spent trying to eliminate this problem and it's now rare on a straight track.
