The society’s first open meeting as such was held at the Community Centre on West Garth, Driffield on Thursday 5th February.

Hosting the meeting was society Chairman, Peter Dymock, who opened the meeting and welcomed everyone present.

Committee members introduced themselves and gave reports on current progress.

Guest speaker this evening was Mr John Dunn, who is a professional mechanical engineer, part owner of a steam locomotive, committee member at the Derwent Valley Railway at Murton Village, near York and is in charge of the DVR’s engineering department.

John spoke extensively to all present about the experiences of the DVR and the business of planning and running a working heritage railway. All the bases were covered with business planning, health & safety, legislation, finance, marketing, staffing and engineering being among the topics covered.

John stressed that the former line between Malton and Driffield was the one in East Yorkshire that offered the best potential in terms of restoration.

Later on questions were fielded by committee members from the audience about the society’s plans, what it is trying to achieve and why.

In addition, various artefacts of the M & DJR were brought along by members including old photographs of the line in it’s working days, station and track diagrams and even original tickets from M & D stations.

It was noted that the prime sources of information for people to find out about this meeting were the Driffield Times and the Radio Humberside interview by the society Chairman.
